My name is Arthur cheng. I passed the MBA entrance exam 2012 scoring 209 which ranks 1st in all applicants for Zhejiang normal university. I’d like to share some ideas and feeling about the process of preparation for the exam with our future exam participants, honoring the request of the authority of the university as well.
I begin my article with the following statement--the exam is really much easier than your imagination. Simultaneously, I’d like to share one of my favorite mottos with you all—the journey of one thousand mils begins with a single step. The reason for which I say so is I think the confidence is the key element to accomplish a goal. We are not supposed to be frightened by any difficulties in sight but we have to attach importance to them. All that we need is much more than confidence. We need persistence and hard work also.
What I said above is the strategic psychological preparation for the exam; now I talk some detailed tactics for the preparation which is fairly effective for me.
Firstly, do not start your intensive preparation too early. I think people always overestimate their ability of persistence, especially for those of us who have been working for years already. The earlier we begin to prepare, the earlier we fizzle out. I think 90 days will be enough for any intelligent and diligent people to scrape through the exam. I actually spent no more than 100 hours on the intensive preparation. Before that, we just need some casual preparation which mainly consists of English vocabulary memorizing and reading ability reviving. The casual preparation should start from the day we are determined to take the exam. Since most of us decide to take the exam very early, the duration of casual preparation will unlikely to be short. I actually think our English level merely depends on how much time we spend on it. The casual preparation should be rather casual and relaxing than tiresome and strenuous, so that we can persist on it fairly long. We just need to take a vocabulary handbook handy wherever we are, and snatch each pinch of time to memorize English words. As for me the most efficient time to memorize vocabulary is when I am on bus, taking subway, aboard train or plane. For practicing reading skills, we merely need do subscribe to an English news paper such as 21st century, China Daily etc, and read several short news stories every day. Reading English newspaper is good method to refresh our reading skills and to broaden our vocabulary, to know the world as well. Incidentally, I also would like to introduce a very easy and effective way to fortify our feeling of language. Self-talking means talking to ourselves and thinking in English as much as possible. It’s really easy to carry out without any limits of time and location. We have no pressure of avoiding making mistakes to do so because there is no audience for us except ourselves. We can have a daydreaming, or make an agenda of a conference which will be held this morning, or think of what we are going to eat for lunch just on our way to the office in the morning. We try to use new words and expressions which we learnt before sleeping last night. I feel it’s an easy and interesting proceeding, but the effects are incredible. As far as the English composition is concerned, I think writing English micro blogs is very useful. No matter how many words we can use in our blogs, just to write something. In conclusion, the core of the casual English preparation is to snatch every opportunity to use and practice English as much as possible. This is the reason why I wrote this article in English. English was my worst course when I was a college student. I participated in CET 4 for 5 times and CET 6 for 4 times. No one who I know took the exams more times than I did hitherto. I hardly got the bachelor diploma without the CET 4 certificate. So if I can pass the English entrance exam, you can do it. After several months’ casual preparation, I think most of us can pass the English exam already. Actually, I almost did not spend any time on the intensive preparation for the English exam, and I did watch less than 10 episodes of video lessons. I simply practice English casually.
Secondly, find out the emphasis of our intensive preparation before we get it started. After several months’ casual preparation, I took a simulated English exam by myself, and found out there would be no problem for me to pass the English exam. Then I began to watch video lessons of math, logic and composition on the day 52 days before the exam. By the way, attending an online MBA entrance exam preparation training school is of great significance for our preparation, which will increase our efficiency dramatically. I soon found out I absolutely had no idea and feeling about the composition, and the reward from the time spent on the course would much less than the one from the time spent on math and logic. I reckoned that I would pass the exam if I got 80% scores of math and logic and 10% of composition. So I quitted the preparation for composition immediately. Actually, I handed on the second sheet without a word on it, and I think my first article was rather rough. The emphasis of preparation became much clear for me from then on. During the process of my preparation, some wretched matters happened for me, including my father got sick and passed away because of the heart attack in December last year and my son had a surgery in January only 3 days before the exam. These 2 tragic matters cost me about 2 weeks. Furthermore, I am working in the headquarters of a large state controlled enterprise, and my average daily working hours are more than 10 besides many business activities after work. And I hardly have intensive study on weekends, because I am working in shanghai and I have only 2 days to stay with my family, so my weekends should be left for my family. I actually had only 22 nights to prepare for the exam. Without the clearness of the emphasis, there would be no chance for me to pass the exam. To further shrink the range of preparation, I use the thin learning materials only, giving up all those thick textbooks. I read only several pages of the textbooks, and found they were not fit for a quick knowledge revival, so I immediately decided to throw them away. I spent about 14 nights on math and 6 nights on logic respectively. The results of self-test seemed to be satisfactory. In order to pluck some points from composition, I spent one night on the video lessons of composition. After the exam, most of my learning materials and textbooks are still brand-new, without a single pen scratch on them, except 3 thin learning materials including 1 for math and 2 for logic. I excised twice for the most of questions in that math book and for some important questions in those logic books. I spent almost all my time and spirit on these 3 books and the consequence seems to be good.
Thirdly, concentrate on what we are doing when we began our intensive preparation. We have to say goodbye to television, say goodbye to shopping on line, say no to any forms of time waste during this period. Because I was seriously pressed for time, I always concentrated on my learning materials so much that there would hardly be anything which could distract me. My whole sour and spirit entirely focused on the books and I indulged myself in the atmosphere of study. When I began to study, I always overlooked the elapsing of time. It always was 2 or 3 o’clock in the dawn when I was aware of the time. If we fully concentrate on study, we don’t feel much tediousness or fatigue, and the efficiency is much higher than our imagination. Actually, we can hardly achieve any goals without concentration of our spirit and attention.
Finally, try to keep a good mood of learning. I graduated from university on February 2004, and have been working for more than 8 years already. Nevertheless, I never lost my curiosity for knowledge and like reading very much in my spare time. What I read covers a broad spectrum of areas including economics, politics, science and technology and so on. My hobby of reading provided me a good mood of learning which helped me to resume intensive study much more efficiently and effectively. We must remain and rejuvenate our ability of study for ever.
Ok,I am unmindful I have said so much. I think if we have done well in all aspects above, a good result of the exam must be redemptive. I sincerely hope this article will be helpful for our future MBA applicants. I’d like to finish this article with following statements. Saying is easy, doing is difficult. Let’s just do it. Good luck and May god bless you!
